En cela, l’écriture de l’histoire s’imbrique étroitement à l’affirmation identitaire d’une région. Ainsi, l’identité de l’Alsace commence à se définir lorsque, au 18e siècle, les historiens se décident à écrire une histoire régionale, et non plus seulement patriotique. En effet, jusqu’à la conquête française de 1648, l’Alsace fait partie du Saint Empire romain germanique et n’a pas d’identité proprement définie. Puis, dès le début du 19e siècle, le patrimoine français, et donc le patrimoine de chaque région, est mis en avant à travers notamment l’enquête Montalivet de 1810 et la publication d’ouvrages historiques et archéologiques. Comment se sont traduits les liens entre identité et histoire durant cette période ? De quelle manière les Alsaciens affirment-ils leur identité au cours des 18e et 19e siècles ? Cet article analyse la recherche identitaire de l’Alsace au sein des travaux historique et archéologique qui se développent aux 18e et 19e siècles. Every region is defined through its identity, identity in which linguistic, cultural and social realities coexist. The writing of history is thus closely interwoven with the identity affirmation of an region. The identity of Alsace, on which the present article focuses, hence begins to be defined when, in the 18th century, historians decide to write a no longer only patriotic but regional history. Until the French conquest of 1648, Alsace is indeed part of the Holy Roman Empire and lacks a strictly defined identity. Then, in the early 19th century, the French heritage, and therefore the heritage of every region, is particularly put forward through the Montalivet investigation of 1810 and the publication of historical and archaeological works. How are the links between identity and history translated during this period? How does Alsace assert its identity during the 18th and 19th centuries? This article analyzes the search for Alsacian identity in the historical and archaeological works that have been introduces during the 18th and 19th centuries.
