He is “man of God” and incarnation of a superior eschatological plan. This concept finds its fulfilment in Oddr Snorrason’s Óláfs saga Tryggvasonar. The saga was originally written in Latin around 1190. The translation into Old Norse should have been made in Iceland at the beginning of the 13th century. The Latin text of Oddr Snorrason’s work has not survived, while there are three witnesses of the translation. Even though Oddr’s work contains several references to the Bible and to hagiographic literature, the presence and the influence of a pre-Christian background is also significant, and the magical element becomes pivotal, as in the prophecies announcing Óláfr Tryggvason’s birth, uttered by seers (spákona—spámenn), worshipping the ancient pagan religion, or when the Christian king, turns to a Lapp, a soothsayer who can foretell the future. These are two examples, among many others present in the text of Oddr’s saga, which demonstrate how the persistence of aspects strongly rooted in the pagan mythical universe is intertwined with the overbearing affirmation of the new Christian faith. In this study, the linguistic analysis of the saga will be used to highlight the contribution of those ancient religious practices and heathen rites and of magic elements, such as divination and apparitions, to the construction of the “royal holiness” characterizing the king. In the saga, the semantic re-elaboration of these elements, which does not obliterate their original meaning, possibly constitutes the most peculiar feature of a source, where linguistic complexity becomes the most evident proof of the deep travail experienced by the Nordic society in front of the new Christian faith. Dans la littérature concernant le premier vrai roi chrétien de Norvège, Óláfr Tryggvason, le souverain est représenté comme l’homme qui résume en lui-même tant le pouvoir royal terrestre qu’une légitimité chrétienne transcendante. Il est donc « homme de Dieu » et incarnation d’un plan eschatologique supérieur. Cette notion trouve son accomplissement dans la saga composée par Oddr Snorrason sur Óláfr Tryggvason (Óláfs saga Tryggvasonar). La saga a été d’abord écrite en latin vers 1190. La traduction en vieux norrois date du début du xiiie siècle. Le texte latin de l’œuvre d’Oddr Snorrason n’a pas survécu, alors qu’il existe trois témoins manuscrits de la traduction. Bien que l’œuvre d’Oddr contienne de nombreuses références à la Bible et à la littérature hagiographique, la présence et l’influence d’un arrière-plan préchrétien sont également notables, et l’élément magique devient un aspect crucial, comme pour les prophéties annonçant la naissance d’Óláfr Tryggvason, prononcées par des voyants (spákona – spámenn), de l’ancienne religion païenne, ou lorsque le roi chrétien se tourne vers un Finnois, un devin qui peut prédire l’avenir. Il s’agit là de deux exemples, parmi beaucoup d’autres présents dans le texte de la saga d’Oddr, qui montrent comment la persistance d’éléments ancrés dans l’univers mythique païen se mêle à l’affirmation de la nouvelle religion chrétienne. Dans cet essai, l’analyse linguistique de la saga va être utilisée pour mettre en évidence la contribution de ces anciennes pratiques religieuses et rites païens, et des éléments magiques, tels que la divination et les apparitions, à la construction de la « sainteté royale » caractérisant le roi.
