Au cœur de notre questionnement se situe la volonté d’historiciser la notion d’enquête et les pratiques qui lui sont associées ; notion omniprésente comme marqueur d’identité disciplinaire pour les sciences sociales et historiques, mais interrogée seulement récemment comme objet d’étude à part entière. Réinvestissant la formule de « culture de l’enquête » forgée par Dominique Kalifa, nous souhaitons replacer les techniques et savoirs de l’observation qui se développent au xixe siècle au sein d’une histoire plus longue, ancrée dans la colonisation et l’histoire des empires. Ce dossier fait dialoguer plusieurs études empiriques sur des enquêtes déployées du xviiie jusqu’au milieu du xxe siècle, entendant par là même contribuer à une histoire globale de la connaissance par enquête. Die Beiträge in diesem Heft sind erste Ergebnisse eines interdisziplinären Forschungsprogramms, das ausgehend von zwei internationalen Workshops am Centre Marc Bloch (2020 und 2022) entwickelt wurde. Im Mittelpunkt dieses kollektiven Nachdenkens steht der Versuch, den Begriff der Enquête und die mit ihm verbundenen Erhebungspraktiken zu historisieren. Ausgangspunkt unserer Forschungen ist die Beobachtung, dass der Begriff der Enquête zwar als Marker disziplinärer Identität für die Sozial- und Geschichtswissenschaften zentral ist, aber erst in jüngster Zeit damit begonnen wurde, ihn als eigenständigen Untersuchungsgegenstand ernst zu nehmen. Hierfür greifen wir auf den von Dominique Kalifageprägten Ausdruck der „Enquêtenkultur“ zurück, um die Beobachtungstechniken und Wissenstechnologien, die im 19. Jahrhundert entwickelt wurden, in eine längere, vom Kolonialismus und Imperialismus geprägte Geschichte einzuordnen. Durch das Versammeln und ins Gespräch bringen verschiedener Untersuchungen zu historischen Erhebungsprojekten vom 18. bis in die Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts soll ein Beitrag zu einer globalen Geschichte des Erhebungswissens geleistet werden. The contributions in this issue sketch the outlines of an interdisciplinary research program that emerged from a collective reflection initiated during two workshops at the Centre Marc Bloch in 2020 and 2022. At the heart of our questioning lies the desire to historicize the notion of Enquête/inquiry and the practices associated with it; a notion omnipresent as a marker of disciplinary identity for the social and historical sciences, but only recently interrogated as an object of study in its own right. By revisiting the term “culture of enquête” (coined by Dominique Kalifa), we aim to situate the techniques of observation that developed in the nineteenth century within a longer history, rooted in colonization and imperial history.
